Collection Size: 2,320

Collection Importance: International

Comments: Collections are owned by the F.B.A. and not the Institute of Freshwater Ecology. Their chief purpose is to provide voucher specimens to accompany the keys in the monograph series: Scientific Publications of the FBA. No immediate threat of disposal, or disintegration, but much of the material needs conserving due to alcohol evaporation. Curation is not a specific interest of the I.F. E. and the long-term future of the collection is uncertain. Investment is worthwhile as this will maintain a valuable scientific resource at Ferry House, or in a Class A institution if transferred. Financial help is required for materials and manpower. Recommend grant aid from NWMS and a letter to the director of the I.F.E. emphasising the importance of the material.

Comments: The C.T. Green herbarium (plus associated photographs) are in good condition and in no danger of deterioration. The collection needs to be documented. Herbarium volumes are stored as books in the reference stacks and covers could prevent dust ingression . The seaweed collection is looseleaf with its attendant dangers. It is of little value to the library, being small and non-local and could be transferred to Liverpool Museum (A59). Recommend no action at present, but suggest possible future transfer of collection to a Class A institution.

Comments: This is the former Wigan Entomological Society collection. However it was never owned by the society, but simply stored there until Greenslate Farm Education Centre was set up. The collection (mostly moths) has been well looked after and is suitably housed in a 22 drawer cabinet. No action is required, but a watching brief should be kept. GFEC is closing down in December '94 and there is some doubt where the collection will eventually go. Recommend transfer to a Class A institution.

Comments: The collection is used for teaching though much less now than in the past. It has suffered as a result and requires considerable rehousing and conservation. The material would benefit from being transferred to a Class A institution in the future. Already the bulk of the historic teaching and reference material has been moved to Liverpool Museum (A59).
